Escaped Emu Stops Traffic on Florida Highway

A 6-foot-tall emu named Taco stopped rush hour traffic on a Florida highway.

The emu jumped a 4-foot fence at his owner’s home and wandered to the highway. Taco strolled through traffic as people made their way to work.

“It was walking toward some folks, which was a major concern,” says a local sheriff. “It’s a big bird.”

The bird's owner Paul Eaton, showed up to help stop Taco. He threw a t-shirt over the bird’s small head to calm it.

Eaton got the bird safely into his truck and back home. “He hangs out here in mating season,” says the owner. “He felt it was time to move on, close to the females, and he hopped the fence.”

The bird suffered a limp as a result of him jumping the fence, but his owner said he seems to be OK. “I think it shocked him more than anything else,” says Eaton.
