Ryan Howard's Blast in Ninth Lifts Phillies Past Mets
Ryan Howard swung the bat, and then the ball flew out of the park.
Hahaha you just helped your team win the ball game dude!
There was no explaining a dramatic 3-2 Phillies victory Wednesday over the Mets, revived by Howard's two-out, two-run blast in the ninth inning. The Phillies' long-shot bid at a comeback still leaves some skeptical; they trail the St. Louis Cardinals by four games and remain behind three teams for the second wild-card berth.
Thirteen games remain.
In a season filled with saddening losses, Howard's homer excited the Phillies. He lugged two strikeouts and a tapper to the pitcher to the plate and represented a team's - and perhaps a season's - final hope.
Mets lefty Josh Edgin threw what he called "a meatball." Howard said he had a hunch right when he swung.
The first baseman, battling a recovery from Achilles tendon surgery amid the worst numbers of his career, was hitless in 18 previous at-bats against lefthanded pitchers before he knocked Edgin's 0-1 fastball over the crowd.
Manager Charlie Manuel expressed his feelings about the home run and the win.

"I blacked out, I guess," Howard said. "I don't know."
