Russian Group Hosted a Festival to Support Jailed Band Members
This past Sunday, a music festival to support jailed members of the Russian band Pussy Riot went live despite police trying to cancel it.

City officials tried to stop Sunday’s show and firefighters had threatened to close down the venue, due to safety violations.

Approximately 1,000 people attended the “Free Pussy Riot Fest” headlined by the Russian rock band.

According to Washington Post, last month three members of the band were sentenced to two years in jail for a “punk prayer” against Putin in Russia’s largest cathedral in a trial that provoked an international outcry.

Several rock artists voiced their support for Pussy Riot from the stage Sunday, and some spectators were wearing balaclavas, the feminist band’s trademark headwear.

Riot policemen surrounded the festival. All proceeds from the show will be donated to Pussy Riot.
