Homeless Man Strangles Pelican Because He Was Hungry

At least this homeless man wasn't on bath salts...

A homeless man has been convicted of strangling a pelican to death because he was hungry and couldn't catch any fish.

Sergio Alvarez, 30, caught the brown pelican near the Malibu pier and a bystander reported that he started to choke it.

Alvarez told police that he found the bird already dead but later admitted that he caught and killed it.

Brown pelicans are a rare bird protected by California law. Alvarez was sentenced to 60 days in jail and a year's probation.
