Drag Racers Doing 125 MPH Before Crash

Illegal street racing is one of the most dangerous things you do. You're not only endangering yourself, but everyone around you.

Police are investigating reports that two cars were drag racing at speeds of up to 125 mph before they crashed in a suburban Melbourne street.

The crash happened when a car turned into the path of the speeding cars on Maribyrnong Road in Ascot Vale just before 10:30pm on Sunday night. One of them rolled many times and hit five parked cars.

Two of the drivers and a passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Senior Constable Rohan Clapham says the driver of the other car that had been racing fled.

"It is a posted 60 kph (40 mph) zone. We've had estimates from witnesses of speeds approaching 200 kph in a residential area," he said. If that's substantiated, that speed's ridiculous for this kind of area."
