Couple Pays Off Mortgage in Pennies
Thomas Daigle delivered a pair of boxes to the steps of Milford Federal Savings and Loan Association this April that contained more than 62,000 pennies, which he had collected for the past 35 years.
In 1977, he and his wife Sandra married and moved into their current Milford home.
After he purchased the home with a mortgage from Milford Federal, Daigle made it his mission to make the final payment in pennies.
He said that he just wanted to make his last payment “memorable.”
Daigle said, “It was something I wanted to do. I always follow through. I was just praying I didn’t die first.”
He began collecting an average of 2.5 pennies per day and placing them into a grape crate. But after a few years, the box began to break due to the overbearing weight.
Daigle then bought a pair of steel military rocket launcher ammo boxes to hold the pennies.
He didn't want to disclose the exact amount of pennies, but by the time he delivered them to the bank he estimated that each box weighed more than 400 pounds.
He said his wife would laugh when he would pick up a penny and say it was going towards the mortgage.
Since moving into their home 35 years ago, the couple has raised two children. They now have two daughter-in-laws and four grandchildren.
Hey, a penny saved is a penny earned, right? Well played.
