Why Are There UFOs in Medieval Paintings?

It's absolutely no secret that I am obsessed with aliens on a major search for the truth of whats really "out there".

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show Ancient Aliens they talk about this subject often, digging up details from our past that may have been over looked and ignored.

Point an example is this recent post that I saw on the site io9, talking about why there are UFOs in medieval paintings.

Many believe that aliens have been visiting us since medieval, and even prehistoric times - hence the appearance of what looks to be "UFOs" in some of these old paintings.

These mysteries aren't limited to paintings, as in South America back between 300 to 1550 CE, gold pieces were discovered that looked like modern day airplanes (photo #4 in the gallery). According to a report from Mystery Pile...Among the intricate gold works are several types of insects and two devices that stand out to be aerodynamic in nature and of no other insect known to exist. The pieces look very much like the designs of modern airplanes and incorporate a number of features essentially proving the Quimbaya knew and understood the principals of flight. Scale replicas of the golden flyer were built 5 times larger and tested precisely. Results from the tests showed proved these airplane shaped devices were capable of flight and actually flew without any modifications using modern techniques.
What does it all mean? We may never know. That is, unless the Ocean X explorer (see link for reference) actually winds up pulling out something from the bottom of the ocean that explains it all. Until then, I guess all we can do is speculate.
